Acadia's History

In 1992, Acadia Insurance Company was formed based on sound management principles coupled with the philosophy of treating all customers fairly and promptly.  Today, Acadia is a major New England employer of over 400 insurance professionals and is recognized by many as the best in the industry.

The key to the company's success is a strong knowledge of the local market and authority to make decisions locally, coupled with the strong backing of a national financial organization, the W.R. Berkley Corporation, and our relationships with premier insurance agencies throughout the Northeast.

W.R. Berkley Corporation

The W.R. Berkley Corporation began operations in 1967.  From very humble beginnings, using unique methods of acquisition and initiative, the Berkley Group of insurance companies has grown into one of the largest and most respected organizations in the industry.

Today, the W.R. Berkley Corporation is a holding company which, through its subsidiaries, does business in all segments of the property casualty insurance business.  They have a unique structure which allows each operating unit to serve its market segment in an autonomous manner.  Each company defines its market by customer, product, class of risk, or geographic territory.  The companies are grouped for management purposes into five operating segments according to the market served:

Regional Property Casualty Insurance
Reinsurance
Specialty Insurance Companies
Alternative Markets
International

W.R. Berkley Corporation's strategy is based on the belief that specialized knowledge about customers, territory, or products only becomes a competitive advantage when this knowledge is applied as close to the customer as possible.  It is this belief that provides the Company with its competitive strength and allows us to deliver superior long-term returns to our shareholders.

The holding company provides an umbrella of specialized services and capital to support the insurance operations, and conducts all acquisition, corporate finance and investment activities.  This framework enables each company to have the advantages of an affiliation with a large entity, without sacrificing local flexibility or individual identity.
